Here, we start our journey... The first step we will take towards our UWC lives... Are we ready?
Every year around November make sure to pay a visit to the official website of your national committee (Turkish National Committee). This is where you'll start your application and you can find all the key information you need to find your application form on the Application page.
Firstly, you would need to open yourself an account. Don't worry about it the procedure...It's really not worth it, because Turkish National Committee and other committees offer ultimate guidance with the support of visuals. Even an idiot like me could find it ...I believe you, geniuses, can definitely do it with ease.
The next step is completing the application form, well recognized as the boring part... It has a few sections; starting with your personal details to your academic life and ends with short essays. It's not that long, but it isn't short either. However, you've got plenty of time to do it... approximately 2 months!
This is the time, when we all sit back, we wait till the last minute as we fool ourselves with the long time ahead of us. Then, of course, we rush everything and somehow manage to submit it on time. I'm not the only one here, right?
Let's get back on track. Personally, the most important aspect of the first stage is the short essays in the last part of the form. There are a few 50 words long essays that ask you about your activities, in which you've displayed your leadership skills, helped the members of the society, participated in sports and took part in the school.
If you don't have any activities to write about, well, you've still got some time to get some activities on your list. Use it wisely! Because, UWC is known for the opportunities it offers beyond the classroom, so these activities have a great value.
Then, there's a reflective essay that requires you to analyse a piece of text, poem, song, etc. that has changed your perspective on a certain topic. There's no limitation...freedom is all yours. However, pick wisely and carefully...choose a topic that has a significance impact.
For instance, my essay revolved around Leonardo DiCaprio. Although we all know him well as an actor from his famous movies, he's also an environmental activist. At the U.N. Council, his moving speech on climate change has really changed my perspective on global warming and I decided to write about it. You can always do somethings similar, but please don't do the same thing...I know you're way more creative than I am.
Finally, they request you to write about one significant event that happened in the world and in your country recently. This is the part, where they actually test you on how much attention you pay to the daily news... Are you up-to-date?
Pick an event that drew the attention of a large population and carries great importance for the future. In my application, I've talked about the transition in the government system of Turkey and the religious conflict at Kudus. You can do the same or anything else of your choice...
The end! Click the 'Submit' button and pray that you'll be chosen by your national committee.

As I said earlier, I've gone through the application process in Turkish National Committee. Although they're quite similar, they also have differences. So, who knows? You may have something slightly different on your application form.
